The Tao of Heaven nourishes by not forcing.
It is common knowledge that the U. S. encourages genetically modified plants to be grown. They tend to produce a higher yield as well as be disease resistance. This sounds great as long as one does not consider that the food didn’t evolve this way there for isn’t natural.
An experiment was performed with a Texas Gourd. The problem was that aphids would inundate the plants spreading a virus causing the plants disease. They modified a gourd with a transgene that would protect the plants from the aphids. The concern was that the modified plants would grow out of control ruining the ecosystem. A test was needed to see an outcome.
So, a crop of natural plants were sown with transgene plants. Spring arrived and so to the aphids. Only the gourds without the transgene were affected just as lab results showed. But then something unexpected happened. Along came the cucumber beetle. They started to eat the healthy plants leaving a bacterial secretion from their saliva which killed every single transgene plant. It turned out the beetles do not like the taste of the plants with the virus and seeks other food sources. What is worse is that with so many healthy plants the concentration of the beetle grew in just a small area. The transgene plants were destroyed.
In the end they learned three things. 1. That the modified plant could never grow out of control. 2. They didn’t yield any extra gourds. 3. How to increase the cucumber beetle population.
