I think that it is fairly common that people have a constant thought and noisy mind. Over the last few months I have been working to gain more control over the chatter but there hasn’t been much change but some change has taken place. I wonder if years of self cultivation will bring about more silence. It is amazing how noisy the mind actually is.
Through meditation it is possible for me to better analyze situations or work to silence the mind. I find that examining my thoughts allows more harmony in my life. Working through issues or thoughts allows the garbage to be purged and the beneficial to be polished. There is so much more calm in my chaotic mind than there was at the beginning of the year. The chatter continues and the is more to work on. It is a process that may take a life time but while I’m here anyway…

I tried for YEARS to quiet my racing mind. No matter what I tried, it never worked. So, I gave up trying and, magically it seems, my mind is a lot quieter and less cluttered these days. Wu wei in action!
It sounds in your case to already be working :) and yes for sure it is a process and you will find stillness. As RT says above, Wu Wei is also useful as trying is also motion so a little non-trying does wonders.
I'm not nearly as wise as the two previous posters, but I read a book recently called Less, by Mark Lesser (funny, isn't it?) that is about quieting the mind clutter and is probably nothing new to you. It reminded me of many things though, and I found it useful.
Well, I don't know how to explain this but in my case I don't use a particular meditation tecnique, I do use a mantra that I just picked up because I liked it (it doesn't sound... um... wow... heh), I have a veggie diet (although I'm not sure if food compromise the tranquility of mind but someone once told me that yes, and I read a few about it but I'm not a scientific), I used to practice yoga and it was useful but unfortunately with 5 dogs licking my face at every asana, I coudn't do it anymore :D
Anyways... it's almost imposible to quiet the mind, just don't get attached to any thoughts, let them past without giving them so much 'thinking', don't let your mind stick in one 'subject', like when you switch dreams in a lucid dream, or like the stream in a river, or like that screensaver from Windows, that with the stars... or sort of. lol!. Oh! I hope I make some sense!!! hahaha
:D
Sojourner, your comment made my morning. Have you thought about putting the dogs outside? :P
Oh! I've tried! but they always make a huge scandal... you won't believe this but, they're so manipulative! o_O Really.
:D
