Thanksgiving volunteer

My wife and I signed up for a program to deliver Thanksgiving Dinners to families in need. It is a great program and this is our second year in a row volunteering. Normally when we drop the food off there is no real thought other than hoping they enjoy the food. One family this year caught me a bit off guard. It has humbled my thinking.

The members of this family were most likely illegal aliens in the country. There was what looked like six people living in a single bedroom house apartment. They had a living room, kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. That was it! 6 people! Four or five of their apartments could have fit in the downstairs of my house. Their bedroom has 5 beds squeezed in while my house alone has 5 bedrooms. We only use 3 of them for sleeping; the fourth is just for toys. The toys at my house have a room just for them! The last one is empty. Wasted space!

They were more welcoming than most of our friends are. They invited us in and brought their children out to meet us. We were there only a few minutes but they were so thankful and hospitable. I have always been against illegal immigration but maybe I need to reconsider my harsh stance. If my family were poor I would do whatever to go where better conditions and prosperity exist. There is no way to blame these people.

This was a humbling experience.

Borders are human constructs. If we're all from the One, how can anybody really be illegal or even an immigrant?
